What the council says about dates: Vehicle registration rules from 1 October 2026

Free DIY allowance

'Barkers Lane HWRC is free for Bedford Borough residents to use.' 'You can bring a maximum of six items of household DIY waste to the HWRC each month.' One item = e.g. 1 bag (up to 50L) of rubble, soil, sand or tiles; 1 sheet of plasterboard up to 1 x 1.5m; 1 door; 1 fence panel. No paid option for extra DIY waste stated.

From Bedford's pages, quoted or summarised.

In England, councils can't charge householders for their own DIY waste up to two 50 litre bags, or one item up to 2000 x 750 x 700mm, per visit, for up to four visits in four weeks. They can charge above that. Check your load.
